Navy December 9, 1940. Separated August 1, 1961. o At one time William was declared dead, since the war department found no trace of him until the usual time for the presumption of death declaration, and in 1942, January, his parents were notified that he was listed as officialy dead. Five years ago when he was just a boy 17 years old, Bill Collins left Hillsboro Community High School to enlist in the Navy. His late father, Welby G. Collins had been a World War I veteran, who served on foreign duty. Bill Collins was captured by Japanese when Corregidor fell and was a prisoner of war at Cabanatuan in the Philippines. He was reported missing in January 1942. In October 1944 he was taken from the Philippines to Japan and his existance, hard up to that time, became more miserable. He survived the terrible trip to Japan, which he made, crowded with from 700 to 800 other prisoners of war, into the 40x40 hold of a Japanese ship under terrible conditions. During the 39 day trip only a little rice and water were given each man daily. When the ship docked in Japan, those who had lived through the harrowing experience were separataed and taken to differenat labor camps. At times, when Bill Collins was moved to different labor camps, he would meet again some of the prisoners of war whom he had seen on the ship Camp conditions and food were terrible. He said the work on the farms and in gardens was not too bad as that work was near the better camps but his last work, months of which before his liberation, was in the lead mines which was hard work and in their run down and weakened conmdition many more died than had survived up to that time. Seaman Collins, when liberated, was at a camp near Sendai about 250 miles north of Tokyo, where he toiled for long hours in a lead ore mine. He received his last mail from home in 1942, the year in which he was captured, except for one package which he received in 1943. His weight was down to 110 pounds when he was freed, but now weighs 180 pounds. After Japan surrendered to the allies early in August, food packages were dropped by American planes for Sandai Camp 33 and labor in the mine stopped on August 15. Prisoners were liberated by Americans on September 13 and were flown back to the States landing at Oakland, California. Seaman Collins cabled from Yokahama, Japan but the message was not received by his relatives. Not knowing this, he proceeded on his way to Great Lakes and on to his home where he arrived early Friday morning/ CLARENCE LAMAR COLONIUS - - Born January 25, 1926, Irving. | Hillsboro and Irving were rejoicing with the mother of William Collins, held prisoner of war since the fall of Corregidor, Friday, October 5, 1945, when they learned he had arrived home about 1:00 a.m. that day after being away so long. His mother, Mrs. Arthur Beasley and family were not aware that he was safe or on his way home as they had received no message from him or the government to that effect. Mrs. Beasley had almost given up ever seeing him again as the time had gone on for so long with no word from him or the government as to his whereabouts. |

| Top picture is U.S.S. Selfridge before it was hit with two Japanese torpedoes in a Naval battle just South of the Island of Bougainville in the Northern Solomon Group of Islands. With air coverage it was able to make 5 knots and make it to Tulagi (Near Guadalcanal) where the lower picture was taken. 52 killed out of the complement of 300. That is the number 2 gun mount that is still hanging on. Number 1 gun mount is gone. Picture below shows the temporary bow they put on while still at Tulagi and then it made it to Mare Island, California where they had a new bow waiting for it. Put it on and the Selfridge was back in action again. |

| lLieutenant Colonel Lipe came home with many decorations. HE WAS AWARDED THE PURPLE HEART, The citation showing he was wounded in action on May 14 when the Flying Fortress, B-17, which he was piloting, was badly shot up in a fight with enemy planes over a military objective and some of the crew were killed. Lipe was wounded in the chest, head and on the shoulder but was able to take the badly-damaged fortress back to headquarters field and save it. The fortress was returning from an attack on Kiel, Prussia, a great naval station at the entrance of the Kiel canal. He also received the distinguished flying cross for that mission and an additional bar (oak-leaf cluster) for completion of a ?? (five trips or missions) to bombard enemy objectives. He also received the air medal with three oak leaf clusters (each being awarded for five missions to bomb enemy territory). While home on leave earlier after completing 25 missions from a base in England from which to bomb various axis strongholds on the continent. He made two attacks on Kiel, was in the first American raid to bomb Wilhelmshave, Bremen, Zwickau, Hamburg, Emden, Rotterdam, the Ruhr valley where attacks were ;made on the great synthetic rubber production plants, four times on Saint Nazaire in France, which is a great submarine base as is also Kiel and Paris where attacks were made on plants where tanks and armoured vehicles are produced. Villcovlay, an industrial suburb or Paris, Antwerp and others. He has flown three planes since he began service in England. Two of them were badly shot up either by enemy fighter planes or by anti-aircraft defense from the ground. The song "Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer" is a very good description of the missions over enemy objectives. Colonel Lipe was born and raised in Irving, the son of Mr. & Mrs Perry Lipe. |
